Wood worm are the larvae of the furniture beetle. It is the larvae of these beetles that cause damage to timber. The adults lay eggs on the surface and the hatching larvae burrow down into the wood. Here they can spend up to 3 years burrowing galleries through the wood. Eventually they develop into adults in late spring/early summer at which point they drill 'exit holes' to leave the wood and to fly away and mate before starting the cycle all over again.
Treating the 'exit holes' may seem like 'shutting the stable door after the furniture beetle has bolted', but it is a way of getting the fluid into the wood via woodworm galleries. The alternative is to treat the surface, provided that the fluid has been able to seep in (i.e. the wood should be unpolished/unvarnished), the adults will be killed as they emerge and when they lay come to eggs on the surface.
